Ray R Hernandez will be giving his presentation on "Becoming the Product Manager you Always Thought You Could Be." When you think of product management, do you dream about massive launches with marketing glamour, and wake up end up chasing developers for status updates? Then this session is for you. Whether you want to become a product manager, or trying to find the best-fit role within a product-based role, you will learn something to help guide your career. Ray will walk you through examples, stories, and techniques from his misadventures in Product Management.

He’s been working in Product Management for almost a decade, and can help aspiring product managers understand which companies use product management the right way, which companies say they do but they don't, and what information and questions you should be asking as you look for that perfect job that doesn't end up becoming a dead-end position where you spend all day writing user stories and chasing bugs, when you should be defining product strategy and it's future.
 

About Ray

Ray began his career in 1996 as an engineer and has followed a windy, indirect, but incredibly valuable path into Product Management.  At the beginning of his career, Ray worked as a consultant for traditional Big 4 firms, worked as a technology strategy consultant, then ventured on his own to work for himself and then decided to pursue product management after business school.

In the last decade, Ray’s experience shifted drastically into working in portfolio/product management for venture-backed start-up companies, Fortune 100, and other companies, with responsibilities in operations, marketing, strategy, and business development to handle all aspects of product design, usability, and profitability.

Ray is currently a Senior Director of Product Management for The Advisory Board and also a Product Management Instructor with General Assembly here in Austin.
